Songs from Willow Glen

Nicolette Aubourg

In cart Not available Out of stock

Originally intended as demos, these are deeply personal original songs performed live with raw honesty and emotion. Rather than attempt to recapture the emotion in a tracking session, instrumentation was added to the existing live guitar/vocal recordings, with the exception of "Craig's List" which was re-recorded. "Songs from Willow Glen" was recorded in the Hollywood Hills and includes several songs that were inspired by life in Laurel Canyon. Other songs on the album are “Garden of Remembrance”, which is a tribute to the victims of September 11th, “Craig’s List” (“a tongue-in-cheek song about online dating”), “Ode to a dog” (“dedicated to all dogs”), and two sonnets (Yeats and Shelley) put to music. The songs all feature Nicolette's acoustic guitar parts, which are predominantly fingerstyle, accompanied by vocals and harmonies. The album was produced by Jorgen Carlsson, who also played percussion, bass and electric guitar, and includes Jeff Young on keyboards/B3, Stefanie Fife on cello, and Erik Eldenius on drums. The album liner notes provide extensive details about the songs and recordings, and contain all the song lyrics as well as original artwork and photographs by Nicolette.

See individual tracks for Lyrics and Credits.

Grand View Drive

Nicolette Aubourg

In cart Not available Out of stock

Début CD from South African non-conformist singer-songwriter-guitarist whose themes range from social commentary to introspection, with fingerstyle acoustic guitar and full band accompaniment including cello, violin, piano, bass and drums.

The physical CD contains in-depth liner notes featuring paintings by Nicolette Aubourg. Music from this album has been featured on NBC's "Passions", several independent movies, and received multiple songwriting awards. The songs, all written by Nicolette Aubourg, apart from the poignant lyrics to “When I Was Old” written by Nicolette’s late mother, Anne Aubourg, are diverse in subject matter: the title track, "Grand View Drive" is named after a street in the Laurel Canyon hills of Los Angeles; track two is inspired in part by Kahlil Gibran's book "The Prophet"; track seven, "Lay Down Your Arms" is a plea for peace. Vocals vary from starkly solo to choral, complementing the rhythmic fingerstyle guitar parts. Instrumentation includes cello, violin, piano, B3, electric guitar, drums, bass and percussion from accomplished musicians Adam Chester, Bob Sheehan, Charlie Bisharat, Doug Baker, Frank Simes, Gavin Lurssen, Jorgen Carlsson, Neil Sebba, Robert Fedeli, and Stefanie Fife. The CD was produced by Steve Holroyd, Bob Sheehan and Nicolette Aubourg. Nicolette Aubourg was born to British/South African parents in South Africa where she was raised and educated, studying classical and jazz guitar, piano, vocal performance and music theory, and acquiring a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and English, before relocating to Los Angeles.

Madiba - Dedication to Nelson Mandela (single)

Nicolette Aubourg

"Madiba, dedication to Nelson Mandela" was inspired by Mr. Mandela's book, "Long Walk to Freedom", and is dedicated to Nelson Mandela and all those who suffer racial injustice.

Artwork by Anne Aubourg;

Lyrics:

Madiba, dedication to Nelson Mandela

A wise man plants a garden where there is bloodshed. He plants Understanding where there is hatred. He waters it with the tears of the ones who are oppressed; he warms it with the memories of the fallen ones, and it bears Hope: a garden to be equally shared; a garden to be equally shared.

Madiba, Madiba, your long walk brought Freedom!
Hear the people sing! Madiba, Madiba, you carried Redemption home! One man can change the world; one man can change the world.

A great man is willing to die that Justice be done. Imprisoned far from his loved ones for twenty-seven years in a nation torn apart by the laws of apartheid where people were persecuted for the colour of their skin - but he forgives. He sees the good in all mankind; he sees a way to reconcile.

Madiba, Madiba, your long walk brought Freedom!
Hear the people sing! Madiba, Madiba, you carried Redemption home! One man can change the world; one man can change the world.

A strong man gives a voice to those who had no choice, and the petals of Equality blossom with Dignity. He reaches far and wide to hear the words of all humanity, and the ones who worked to right the wrong are in his heart and in his soul; he carries on. He’s the tree of strength sprung from their well;
he’s the tree of strength sprung from their well.

Madiba, Madiba, your long walk brought Freedom!
Hear the people sing! Madiba, Madiba, you carried Redemption home! One man can change the world; one man can change the world; change the world.

The Invitation

Nicolette Aubourg

In cart Not available Out of stock

Oriah Mountain Dreamer's well-known poem "The Invitation", which has been translated into over fifteen languages, is sung by Nicolette Aubourg, who wrote the music and plays all the accompanying instruments.

"'The Invitation' by Oriah Mountain Dreamer is one of the most beautiful poems I have read. I am honored that Oriah allowed me to compose and perform music to accompany her words. I have tried to interpret the integrity and sensitivity of her lyrics with my voice, acoustic guitar and a sparse instrumental arrangement." Nicolette Aubourg
