This album addresses socio-political issues including Apartheid, suicide prevention, the Ebola virus epidemic, animals in captivity, job outsourcing, the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, and a tribute to Nelson Mandela. I wrote this song about the epidemic of mass shootings in America. We finished the recording less than a week before the El Paso and Dayton shootings. This song is a cry for gun control and a tribute to victims and survivors of mass shootings and gun violence. The last verse is a list of mass shootings from Columbine to Border Bar. Originally intended as demos, these are deeply personal original songs performed live with raw honesty and emotion. Rather than attempt to recapture the emotion in a tracking session, instrumentation was added to the existing live guitar/vocal recordings, with the exception of "Craig's List" which was re-recorded. "Songs from Willow Glen" was recorded in the Hollywood Hills and includes several songs that were inspired by life in Laurel Canyon. Other songs on the album are “Garden of Remembrance”, which is a tribute to the victims of September 11th, “Craig’s List” (“a tongue-in-cheek song about online dating”), “Ode to a dog” (“dedicated to all dogs”), and two sonnets (Yeats and Shelley) put to music. The songs all feature Nicolette's acoustic guitar parts, which are predominantly fingerstyle, accompanied by vocals and harmonies. The album was produced by Jorgen Carlsson, who also played percussion, bass and electric guitar, and includes Jeff Young on keyboards/B3, Stefanie Fife on cello, and Erik Eldenius on drums. The album liner notes provide extensive details about the songs and recordings, and contain all the song lyrics as well as original artwork and photographs by Nicolette.
