Lyrics

Made in China
(commentary on an interdependence destroying local cultures and economies)

We need the work in our own land;
the unemployed just stare and stand.
There’s no work from door to door
‘cause nothing’s made here anymore – it’s made in China.

I travel far to get away –
a little place for a holiday.
I find a gift – a souvenir,
but it’s not made by the locals here – it’s made in China.

She needs us, but she stands alone.
She feeds us, can she feed her own?
She’s ancient, she’s a prodigy.
She’s scary, but we’re on our knees to China.

She fills our need to buy things cheap –
with prices, we just can’t compete
and we won’t pay more from our own stores.
This way we can buy much more – if it’s made in China!

She needs us, but she stands alone.
She feeds us, can she feed her own?
She’s ancient, she’s a prodigy.
She’s scary, but we’re on our knees to China.

I met a boy from far away.
He used to work all night and day –
he had no time to eat or sleep –
he was just an average employee; he was made in China.
